HCA Gulf Coast Division believes that all patients have inherent rights when it comes to their own care. Accordingly, our structure, policies, and practices are designed to preserve those rights, which include:

  • Reasonable access to care
  • Considerate and respectful care
  • Access to visitors
  • Knowledge of the name/title of all clinical staff involved in their treatment
  • Information on their diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis (including unanticipated outcomes)
  • Involvement and consultation with respect to the care received
  • Opportunity to compose advance directives and appoint a surrogate to make healthcare decisions on his/her behalf to the extent permitted by law
  • Have the hospital staff and practitioners comply with those directives
  • Have a family member, representative, and physician notified promptly of admission to the hospital
  • The option to accept or refuse treatment and be informed of the medical consequences of such refusal
  • Awareness of available clinical research, including the right to refuse such
  • Personal respect, privacy and confidentiality
  • Access to information contained in his/her clinical or medical records within a reasonable timeframe
  • Confidentiality of clinical and medical records
  • Social, religious, and psychological respect
  • Access to a qualified interpreter
  • Knowledge of hospital rules, regulations, and complaint resolution
  • The right to be transferred to another facility
  • Knowledge concerning the professional status of caregivers
  • Access to protective services
  • Appropriate assessment and management of pain
  • The right to be free from restraints or seclusion that are not medically necessary
  • Care free from abuse or harassment
  • Explanation of all hospital bills and access to financial counseling

HCA Gulf Coast Division also asks all its patients to be responsible for their own health in the following ways. Doing so promotes better outcomes.

  • Communicating honestly and directly
  • Cooperating with the healthcare team
  • Understanding your health issues, and asking questions when you don’t
  • Actively participating in your own health issues
  • Follow hospital rules and regulations
  • Be respectful of other patients, staff, and hospital property
  • Immediately inform the hospital of a violation of patient rights
  • Fulfilling financial obligations
  • Communicate safety concerns
